CREATING ENSEMBLE WITH SAM BARON
“It is all about human togetherness: creative connection where design practice is used as an excuse to meet, share and grow”
After 30 years in the design and craft of timeless furniture with an emotional connection, De La Espada are expanding our output with a new arm dedicated to limited edition, collectible pieces. Guided by our deep-rooted curiosity and commitment to creativity, this new initiative pushes the boundaries of our design and craft expertise as well as our approach to innovation – honouring the power of collaboration that lies at the heart of design- and art ensembles. The first collection to arise from this new initiative will be released at Lisbon by Design this month, designed by Lisbon-based French designer Sam Baron, working closely with eight members of our in-house design studio De La Espada Atelier.
Sam Baron is a product- and interior designer and creative director whose work merges art and design, benefitting from his enthusiasm for design thinking: analysing, thinking and rethinking, and taking risks. In his inquisitive approach to problem solving, he uncovers fresh perspectives while rooting in research, culture, and craft. Collaborative creativity is part of his design DNA, prominent in his life since his time at Fabrica, Benetton’s world-renowned creative research centre in Italy, where he was first a mentee fresh out of university, then served as director for over a decade leading teams of young designers and collaborating with international brands, museums, and galleries.
A GROUP VISION FOR GATHERING
“Design in its classical form is more ‘signed’; almost a selfish practice with the goal of giving a personal answer to a design challenge. To mentor and to build a team around a project means to inspire and also to step back somehow; you need to be ready to be surprised, to read sketches and intentions in order to build a common language for communication between members/designers and also with the client and its public,” Sam explains.
“It is challenging and requires starting from scratch, sharing a blank canvas from which will emerge a very unique group answer. Everyone must feel comfortable to give in an openminded way with no fear or shame. It is a very enriching process as we can see how each of us is giving to the group project, is bringing personal skills, experiences and knowledge and, in a way, is growing thanks to this unique process,” he continues.
CREATIVE FREEDOM ROOTED IN CRAFT KNOWHOW
For our new collection, entitled Ensemble, Sam Baron led a creative journey with De La Espada Atelier that championed collective reflection, exploration, and lived experience. Sam’s open, inclusive, and playful approach created an environment that was relaxed and respectful, with room for both gravity and humour. This created fertile conditions for navigating toward unexpected design solutions.
“We started by exploring the word seat in a more philosophical way, which led us to find associated themes we hadn’t initially considered – words like safety, coexistence, comfort, and waiting,” explains David Taipina of De La Espada Atelier.
“This allowed us to develop a fresh perspective on what seems like a commonplace action,” shares Daniela Abrantes, also from the team. She continues, “Sam's unique methodology, which fosters creative exploration through the continuous exchange of experiences and ideas, leads to naturally distinct outcomes.”
Ensemble embodies a distinctive group vision reflecting time spent together — first seated around a table examining the emotions and thoughts that surround how we sit together, then building upon the ideas through sketches, mock-ups and prototypes to test new ways of gathering people.
Sam's methodology fostered freedom of expression and form, merging the individual and collective experience of all contributing designers, as well as their expertise in engineering and craft. It magnified the creative energy of the individuals and the group.
“Sam has a very open design approach and gave us the opportunity to create everything from scratch. And he worked, based on his experience, like a rudder, to orient us toward optimal decisions,” says De La Espada Atelier’s Pedro Machado.
The ideas generated in the early stages of the process were refined, tested, detailed, and composed. Every aspect was questioned and carefully considered, resulting in an extremely well thought through and masterfully executed ensemble of six seating propositions created with a specific space at the Lisbon by Design fair in mind.
A TRIBUTE TO FORESTS
Nature is at the core of the Ensemble collection, both in materials and feeling; solid wood is used in abundance and the collection addresses the deep human need to congregate.
Versatile pieces including sculptural chairs and stools, an unconventional day bed, and a smooth organic sofa work in dialogue with one another, each conveying an outline or memory of what one would expect to find in a clearing in the forest; a fundamental place to rest and gather.
With curvilinear forms in solid wood, ceramic, and stone, and upholstery that resembles plant life, Ensemble is an imaginative collection with a universal vernacular; embracing the textures, materiality and grandeur of nature. Crafted from walnut, the products naturally reflect the geometry and scale of a tree trunk.
The pieces draw upon De La Espada’s craft expertise in woodworking and upholstery, advancing the skills of our master craftspeople:
“It was exciting to challenge standard production techniques, improving and innovating with new technical solutions while giving each piece its own unique identity,” says Gonçalo Gonçalves of De La Espada Atelier.
Highlighting De La Espada’s globally recognised saber fazer (Portuguese savoir faire) as woodworkers and upholsterers, the intricate, sculptural products are built to a standard that is expected by rigorous collectors and, due to their complexity, will be limited in production to 20 units per design.
CAPTURING AN EXPERIENCE
“We created a collection of proposals for how to sit together mirroring our own team experience and with a strong narrative about nature and the forest where wood comes from,” explains Sam.
David Taipina continues: “The products can stand alone, but when brought together, they create a space that makes you feel small, like being immersed in a forest.”
Ensemble is part of a new arm of De La Espada, one that seeks greater design freedom, protecting the spirit of the small workshop of De La Espada’s beginnings over 30 years ago.
This collection draws upon Sam Baron’s extensive design experience, merged with that of eight members of De La Espada Atelier including André Silva, Bárbara Cruz, Daniela Abrantes, David Taipina, Gonçalo Gonçalves, João Neves, Pedro Machado, and Ruben Constanço.
De La Espada believes in objects with emotional resonance. We value this not only as a way of enhancing the beauty in one’s day-to-day life, but as a way of respecting resources, the environment; the more one feels connected to a well-designed and -crafted product, the more likely they will hold on to it, and pass it to the next generation. This is forged through thoughtful connection at every stage of a product's creation, from the sourcing of materials to design and craft, always with the human experience held paramount.
With almost 30 years of design experience and international acclaim, Sam Baron most values the projects and relationships he has built along his journey: “It is all about human togetherness: creative connection where design practice is used as an excuse to meet, share and grow,” he says.
