SADDLERY AND WOODCRAFT

Formed by hand and guided by tradition, Sela’s leather seat honours the exquisite craft of equestrian saddlery by placing it into a new context and purpose.
Sela is born from collaboration - between designers, woodworkers, upholsterers and master saddlers in Portugal - each bringing generational and modern expertise to a shared vision of enduring design.
The saddle leather seat is crafted through a meticulous process of soaking, stretching, and stitching - shaped by touch and generations-old know how.
This film by Building Pictures captures the activities of the Sela Lusitana workshop in Leiria, Portugal, where expert saddlers handcraft the exquisite leather seat of the Sela Chair.
Traditional saddlery processes are adapted for Sela seating, this larger application requiring up to three craftspeople working together to perfect the stretching and stitching of the hides. Every piece of leather has unique characteristics which must be accommodated in the artisanal process.
Leather moulding begins with a water soak followed by stretching onto a template where it must dry for up to 72 hours. Further shaping happens directly on Sela’s timber frame to get every curve perfect before being sewn, edge sanded, buffed and sealed.
CONSTRUCTION / DETAILING / JOINERY
Each timber frame is built with time-honoured joinery and precise detailing - a quiet display of the cabinetmaker’s skill.
De La Espada woodworkers combine advanced technology with handcraft to create the intricate, tactile frames. Joinery including mortise and tenon and wedge tenon create robust bonds with beautiful detailing. The wood is hand sanded to a silky touch before finishes that honour the inherent character of the material are applied by hand.

Sela Sofa is generous in proportion, refined in detail. Designed for gathering, connecting, and creating new rituals of comfort.
