Inspired by the work of Carlo Scarpa, Charlotte Perriand and Josef Frank, Twenty-Five Bed features a special edition woven headboard made from junco, a material commonly used in Portugal to make baskets and handbags. Rather than working with a pre-fabricated mat, De La Espada uses the timber frame of the headboard as a loom upon which the junco is woven, with Danish paper cord used for the warp. As the junco is naturally relatively short in length, the back of the headboard features the cut ends of the grass, highlighting the material's nature and the laborious handwork that goes into creating each unique piece. With its slender frame and relatively small footprint, this bed is suitable for compact spaces, while its headboard, beautiful from all sides, makes it ideal for use in the centre of a room.

SPECIFICATION
Available in black walnut, white oak, or ash in a range of finishes and junco. See menus below for further material information.

Crafted at the solar-powered De La Espada factory in Portugal. Designed by De La Espada Atelier and rigorously engineered with the support of our in-house product development team and expert craftspeople. Durability, comfort and aesthetics combine for a product that lasts a lifetime.

Timber is sustainable solid wood from North America or Europe, offering long-term repairability of the surface. Natural colour and grain variations in every plank make each piece an individual. Traditional wood joinery bonded with wood glue ensures structural integrity. All finishes are non-toxic and applied by hand, sprayed or rubbed.

De La Espada Atelier is the De La Espada in-house design team, led by Simon Kämpfer. The product range is influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and mid-century Scandinavian design combined with the rich craft heritage of Portugal. The expertise in design, craft and retail that De La Espada has gained over more than 25 years is revealed in furniture that is quiet and intricately detailed, functional and versatile, luxuriously tactile, and at once international and rooted in the home of our dedicated factory.

We have the first pieces designed by our own Atelier, which will be dedicated to exploring historical periods that interest the firm, to carry out research when it comes to both traditional craft techniques and new materials, and to explore new typologies,” Luis De Oliveira, co-founder of De La Espada.

Solid wood is an expression of the life of a tree, grown for at least 30 years, and the weather patterns it experienced, the absorption of sunshine and minerals. The tree is imbued with meaning, and this meaning is transferred to the piece of furniture it becomes.

Our planks are cut in a way that honours the growth rings and grain, making them clearly visible.

AMERICAN BLACK WALNUT

Our American black walnut is from the midwestern United States. This is a prized hardwood with luxuriously figurative grain patterns and great strength. The walnut tree is relatively small, and the dark heartwood is surrounded by sap wood that is blond in colour.

Our American black walnut timber is available in a choice of oil finishes.

Danish oiled walnut

Black oiled walnut

White oiled walnut

Our Danish oil, white oil, and black oil finishes provide a renewable surface for enduring beauty. Damage can be repaired with relative ease, as the timber can be reapplied with wax or oil at any moment.

AMERICAN WHITE OAK

Our American white oak is from the eastern coast of the United States. Oak has long been used in furniture due to its great density, outstanding durability and simple, understated beauty. Its durability is compounded by the fact that it contains tannin acid, which naturally prevents rotting.

Our American white oak timber is available in a choice of oil finishes, or an oxidised finish.

Our oxidised timber is sealed with a clear matte lacquer to maintain the colour whilst preserving the tactility of the surface.

EUROPEAN ASH

Our European Ash is from Portugal, Spain and France. European Ash is a hardwood that has long been prized by cabinetmakers due to its versatility and simple beauty. This dense timber has a coarse yet even texture, compressive strength, and an appealing straight grain. It varies in colour from a cream to pale tan colour and accepts stains and coatings more readily than other timbers.

Our European ash timber is available in a choice of oil, painted, or stained finishes.
